The Group of the Altos releases its debut disc with a March 10 gig at Stonefly.

New music from Surgeons in Heat & Group of the Altos

There's some fine new local music on the horizon.

First up, one of my favorite Milwaukee bands, Surgeons In Heat, digitally released the first single from its second EP, "Midnight at Bellevue," yesterday.

Like its self-titled predecessor, this five-song EP is rooted in breezy '70s pop and soul and instantly infectious. The download is due March 27 for $4.99 and the band is eying releasing the EPs as a single, 11-song 12" vinyl disc.

In the meantime, you can check out the simmering "Never Noticed" for free, as a taster.

Meanwhile, Group of the Altos will celebrate the release of its debut record, "Altos," Saturday, March 10 at Stonefly.

The 12-piece Group of the Altos has been active for five-years so it seems safe to say that the record – released digitally in December – is long-awaited.

It was recorded last May by Brian Joseph, who has worked with Bon Iver, Bowerbirds and Solid Gold.

This last Tuesday 88NINE Radio Milwaukee held their annual award ceremony to celebrate some of the best that the Milwaukee music sphere has to offer.

Many Altos, one sound

Finding a way for different personalities in a band to work together - and work well - is a tricky situation. Be it pride, sensitivity or a unique way of hearing and envisioning things, talented musicians are often slightly off-center when it comes to the creation of music, which is something that has caused break-ups and feuds within major and minor bands of every generation. Now, imagine having a dozen members in a band. This is the seemingly crazy plight of Group of the Altos - or, as they`re known now, The Altos.

Each week David Dye, host of NPR`s "World Cafe" music show - broadcast in Milwaukee on 88.9 - picks an emerging artist to feature for a week as a "World Cafe: Next" artist. Next week, beginning Monday, that band will be Milwaukee`s Surgeons In Heat, according to frontman Johnathon Mayer. In related news, Jaill`s second Sub Pop record is being mastered today.
