To many, Bay View is one of the Milwaukee neighborhoods experiencing a revival of sorts. Just south of downtown, the "other East Side" boasts affordable homes (though not for much longer) and new shopping, as well as a mix of old and new restaurants and bars. Some Bay View taverns have been around forever, it seems, while others are just hitting the hipster scene.

Here is a short list of some of Bay View's tavern treasures:

At Random
2501 S. Delaware Ave.
(414) 481-8030

At Random is a quiet and dimly-lit bar with decor stuck in the '50s and prodigious ice cream-based drinks. Of course, you can also have more typical cocktails, wine and beer, but who can pass up a cozy booth, an astonishing Tiki Love Bowl and two straws? Miaaaaooooow. Note: At Random seems to be randomly closed, so call first.

Bar Lulu
2265 S. Howell Ave.
(414) 294-5858
lulubayview.com

Bar Lulu is an expansion of Cafe Lulu, and it's easily one of the funkiest lounges in Bay View. Not only do they serve the cafe's excellent and reasonably-priced food, Lulu is also big enough for live music and ample seating. The bar has an impressive beer and wine list and makes one heck of a Mojito.

Bay View Bowl
2416 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 483-0950

Yes, it's a bowling alley, but BVB also holds its own as a bar. With super-cheap taps of ice-cold beer, as well as famous Bloody Mary's, owners Mike and Andrea will treat you right. Just don't ask them to turn down the Cheap Trick.

Blackbird
3007 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.

Probably the newest kid on the block, Blackbird opened in the former Groove space in late 2008. The bar takes it old school with old time video games and push button booths.

Burnhearts
2599 S. Logan Ave.
(414) 294-0490

An absolute neighborhood favorite, Burnhearts' loyal customers will tell you anytime what they love about their local bar. Pool and shuffle board in the back, Burnhearts regularly has DJs, great drink specials, an extensive beer list and a hometown vibe.

Cactus Club
2496 S. Wentworth Ave.
(414) 482-0160
cactusclubmilwaukee.com

The Cactus Club is a homey corner bar that welcomes a diverse crowd of alternative music fans. The expanded back room is the scene of regular gigs featuring a wide variety of live music by bands from Milwaukee and beyond.

Cafe Centraal
2306 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 755-0377

thecafecentraal.com
Cafe Centraal more than filled the old open corner on Kinnickinnic and Lincoln Avenues. Serving both lunch and dinner, Cafe Centraal has a binder full of Belgian beers and taps.

Club Garibaldi
2501 S. Superior St.
(414) 483-6335

A remnant of Bay View's northern Italian community, the first such enclave in the city, Club Garibaldi -- named for the great Italian patriot -- is also a reminder of the many mutual aid societies that Italian-American communities founded throughout America. Nowadays, few people make the connection anymore and Club Garibaldi has become known as one of the must-hit spots on a South Sider's night out, drawing glass tippers from as distant as South Milwaukee. A friendly place with regular local gigs in the spacious back room, Club Garibaldi sits just across the Hoan Bridge making it a mere five-minute ride from downtown.

Frank's Power Plant
2800 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 481-9200

Frank's was formerly known as Chuck's on KK. Chuck's loyal rockabilly crowd can still be found here, as can a mellow vibe (except after softball games, etc., when it can get boisterous).

The Highbury Pub
2322 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 294-4400
thehighbury.com

You might not find a lot of soccer bars in Milwaukee, and until The Highbury, you certainly wouldn't find many in Bay View. But Joe Katz changed that when he opened the pub on KK. They focus on good beer and live music, and it's not hard to see the influence of The Nomad World Pub at this uber-cool bar, just south of Lincoln. Even if you can't make it down, you can keep up on the "futbol" schedule on their Web site.

Kneisler's White House
2900 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 483-2900

The White House is an oddly shaped tavern that lords over one of the many bends in Bay View's Kinnickinnic Avenue, and has done so for more than 100 years. Even better, it looks like the only things to have changed are the music on the jukebox and the clothing on the patrons (and the barrels beneath the bar!). Old photos of the pub line the walls and are a testament to how static things have been there. A perfect pint, an assortment of games, a well-loaded jukebox and volleyball courts out back make this the best corner bar in the neighborhood.

Lee's Luxury Lounge
2988 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 481-2080

Lee's still looks a lot like Evan's (which some say was the peak for this bar). But with good beer, loud music and ample room for seating, Lee's remains a Bay View chillin' hot spot.

The Newport
939 E. Conway
(414) 486-1768

Even after a significant facelift, The Newport still has "corner bar" written all over it. Nothing pretentious here: just locals enjoying a cold drink. Drink a couple more, then try to figure out the deal with the giant wall-sized mural of famous (and not famous) people adorning it.

Palm Tavern
2989 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 744-0393

The Palm is quite simply one of the best bars in Milwaukee. If you subscribe to the tried and true bar formula, it shouldn't even succeed -- no Miller products, no TVs, only funky jazz and the tiniest of all neon signs. The drinks aren't cheap, but the beer selection is expansive. It's just something about this little hole in the wall that brings out the hipsters. Check it out -- if you can find it.

Palomino
2491 S. Superior St.
(414) 747-1007

palomino.com
Palomino is the restaurant and bar that introduced Bay View to the masses. Just south of the Hoan Bridge, its trucker motif and ice-cold Pabsts have become the stuff of legends. With great patio seating and an awesome jukebox, the joint gets pretty crowded on the weekends -- but it's always worth it.

Roman's Pub
3475 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 481-3396
romanspub.com

Roman's is a favorite with the Bay View boys who like to fire up a stogie to spice up that after-work beer. Hard-nosed construction workers sit next to neighborhood veterans and recently-arrived yuppies in this slice of life tavern. Mike Romans himself is one of the highlights and his presence always means the bar is aflame with conversation. A nice deck and a patch of grass juts out to the south for those warm summer nights, but atop a stool at the bar is the place where the die-hards come to worship at the foot of the healer (beer, that is).

Sugar Maple
441 E. Lincoln Ave.
(414) 481-2393

mysugarmaple.com
Sugar Maple, located just east of Kinnikinnic Avenue, was one of the first Bay View establishments to open completely smoke free. This is definitely a beer drinkers bar with over 60 imported beers on tap.

Telluride
2155 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
(414) 312-7766

Added to Bay View in 2008, Telluride is an eco-friendly bar with practices focused on the environment. Check out the huge beer garden on the south side of the bar for great summertime drinks.
